Gull Wings, the legend
Born to win, this is one of the best sports cars of the 1950s. Even today, the gullwing doors are truly astonishing. It won major competitions such as the Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Nürburgring and the Mexican Panamericana.
The Mercedes 300 SL, ‘Sport Leicht’, is considered one of the first supercars ever built. In addition to being known for its distinctive gull-wing doors, the motor industry credits it with being the first car to be fitted with a petrol engine with direct fuel injection.
Originally a racing car, its success prompted the marque to convert it to a road car. 1,400 units were produced between 1954 and 1957, and it exceeded 240 km/h (150 mph).
