Upside-down bathtub
Ferry Porsche, Ferdinand’s son, decided to build a lighter and more commercial car than the coupé version. He took the advice of Max Offman, the marque’s US agent, and so began the myth of the ‘upside-down tub’, of which thousands of cars were sold, mainly in the USA.
Porsche has always aroused passions, but one of its best-known lovers was the actor James Dean. Not only did he own a Porsche very similar to ours, but he also raced with it as an amateur. At first, his presence at the races aroused scepticism among the drivers, but they soon realised that the artist had a lot of talent, something that materialised in spectacular victories and comebacks that delighted the fans.
American rock and blues singer Janis Joplin posed on her Porsche, customised by artist Dave Richards, who painted her vision of ‘The Story of the Universe’ on it.
The Porsche Speedster also made a cameo appearance in the film Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis.
